Château Lafite-Rothschild 1869

World Record Breaking Auction

Château Lafite-Rothschild 1869

Collectors were in a fever to buy this weekend at Sotheby’s wine auctions in Hong Kong. And the bidders, according to Robert Sleigh, Sotheby’s head of wine in Asia, were mostly from China.

Three bottles of Château Lafite-Rothschild 1869 sold for HK$1.8 million each. The vintage 1869 bottles — sold in a single lot — went for multiples more than expected and set a new record for wine sold at auction. They were estimated to sell for HK$40,000 to HK$50,000 a bottle. All told, seven bottles pulled in more than HK$1 million each, including vintages of 1869, 1870 and 1899. The 284 lots included many bottles of Lafite as well as other those of other châteaux owned by Domaines Baron de Rothschild, and all sold.
